| 10 precautions while using Valium |

Valium belongs to a group of drugs which are known as benzodiazepines. These drugs act on the chemicals in the brain which might make one feel unbalanced and might cause anxiety.
Valium is used to manage anxiety disorders. The drug is also used to treat agitation, shakiness and hallucinations which might be produced while on alcohol withdrawal treatment. The drug is also used to provide relief in case of certain types of muscle pain. This drug could be used to treat many other ailments.
But, there are some side effects of taking this drug. Therefore, proper precautions are to be taken while using Valium for any therapy. Some of these precautions are outlined below:
1 This drug should not be prescribed to persons who are allergic towards diazepam or benzodiazepines. They include alprazolam (Xanax), chlorodiazepoxide (Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), lorazepam (Ativan), or oxazepam (Serax).
2 This drug should not be prescribed to women who are pregnant because this drug may cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Also, this drug should not be prescribed to women who are breast-feeding their baby, because the drug may pass into breast milk and may be harmful for the nursing baby.
3 Patients who are suffering from any breathing problems, glaucoma, kidney or liver diseases, epilepsy or other seizure disorder, or has a history of depression, suicidal thoughts, or are addicted to alcohol or any drugs should inform the doctor about this if this drug is prescribed for you.
4 By taking Valium, you will be feeling sleepy. Therefore, you should avoid using any other drugs which would make you feel drowsy. This would add farther to your feeling of drowsiness.
5 While you are under treatment with Valium, you should avoid consumption of alcohol. Because, this drug enhances the effects of alcohol on the body.
6 Long use of Valium could become habit forming. Therefore, this drug should be taken under strict medical supervision. This drug is to be taken only by the person for whom the drug has been prescribed, and not by others.
7 This drug should be stored in a secure place so that others would not be able to use it. Specially, this drug is to be protected from use of those persons who have a history of drug abuse or addiction.
8 The sedative effect of Valium lasts longer for elderly people. Because of this, cases of accidental fall are quite common for old people who are taking Valium. Therefore, they should take extra caution to avoid falling down or accidentally getting injured.
9 This drug is not to be prescribed to a baby who is less than six months old.
Valium is prescribed for treatment of various ailments, but proper precautions are to be taken while taking this drug because of various side effects caused by this drug. |
