| What You Need to Know About Root Canal |
By:
Zyra Robinson |

A root canal is painful and expensive. But is it really necessary to have one? A lot of people have asked about the need for this type of dental treatment, especially those who have dental phobia and those who are really concerned about its cost. According to a dentist in McKinney, who practices dentistry at Dental McKinney, patients should not be embarrassed to ask the opinions of several dentists on the need for a root canal treatment. At the same time, the dentist said that it doing some research about root canal would allow the patient to assess if he or she really needs a root canal treatment because some dentists, according to the dentist, are pressured to prescribe root canal treatment because of economic considerations.
Dentists in McKinney explained that to understand root canal better, a patient must understand that the teeth are tough on the outside although inside they have a soft core called a nerve chamber which is made up of nerve tissue and blood vessels that feed the nerve. One of the dentists said that a serious irritation of the nerve can be caused by either a deep decay, a deep filling as a result of that decay, or an injury to the tooth. If a nerve degenerates completely the tissues die and gangrene develops. The nerve chamber may also become infected in some cases.
This condition, said the dentist, usually leads to infection, which results in pain and swelling. "Just because pain and swelling occur does not necessarily mean a root canal is required," the dentist said.
A dentist in Allen said that millions of root canals have been done when in reality there was no need for this procedure. "More often than not, there are dentists who frequently misconstrue gum tissue abscesses as being nerve abscesses. Gum tissue infection can be healed and the problem might be resolved without having a root canal," said the dentist. He added that some of those dentists seem a bit overzealous in prescribing root canals because of some economic pressure. "Their motive in prescribing root canal is certainly at least in part because they are expensive," said the dentist.
A dentist in Frisco pointed out that gum abscess can generally be cleared up either by cleaning out the space where the infection exists. He said that the patient, in most cases, can do the cleaning himself if told how. If the situation is a bit more serious, it can be one by the patient himself through the judicious use of an antibiotic. "Either way it is far less expensive, simpler and probably better for natural long-run health than the root canal alternative," the dentist said.
He added: "Before you submit yourself for a root canal, make sure that you really need it. You can tell a lot about this yourself. For example, if a tooth has recently darkened in color in comparison to adjacent teeth, this is usually an indication that nerve damage has occurred. If the tooth is sensitive to heat but relieved by cold, that is if hotter liquid, for example, makes it hurt and colder liquid seems to ease or eliminate the pain, then this generally points to nerve damage, but not always."
