| Green Tea's Antioxidants Promote Healthy Teeth and Gums, Oral Care Experts Say |
By:
Zyra Robinson |

Green tea, whose origins date back over 4,000 years, is slowly becoming more popular in the United States largely because of the health benefits associated with it. Studies abound about the health benefits of green tea, a popular beverage in Asia, especially Japan, China, and Korea. According to ancient Chinese and Japanese culture, the consumption of green tea is believed to cure diseases and heal wounds. Recent scientific studies about the health benefits of green tea have establish the beverage's health benefits, especially in weight loss, heart concerns, and cancer prevention, according to dentists in Plano who swear by the benefits of drinking green tea.
A dentist in Plano, one of the practicing periodontists (a periodontist is a dental expert when it comes to the treatment of oral inflammation; a periodontist receives three additional years of specialized training in periodontics, one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, after dental school) at the Dental Plano clinic, said that a study that was recently published in the Journal of Periodontology, the official publication of the American Academy of Periodontology (the AAP is an 8,000-member association of dentists specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and in the placement of dental implants), showed that green tea consumption also help promote healthy teeth and gums. The researchers of the study analyzed the periodontal health of 940 men. According to the researchers, the men who regularly drank green tea had superior periodontal health than those that consumed less green tea. The study's author, Dr. Yoshihiro Shimazaki of Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, was quoted as saying: "It has been long speculated that green tea possesses a host of health benefits…And since many of us enjoy green tea on a regular basis, my colleagues and I were eager to investigate the impact of green tea consumption on periodontal health, especially considering the escalating emphasis on the connection between periodontal health and overall health."
Oral care experts from Dentistry Plano said that the study surveyed and examined male participants aged 49 through 59 based on three indicators of periodontal disease-periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment loss of gum tissue, and bleeding on probing of the gum tissue. A DDS in Plano, who often refers to the aforementioned study to promote the health benefits of green tea to his patients, said that the researchers found out that for every cup of green tea consumed per day, there was a decrease in all three indicators. This reflects a lower instance of periodontal disease among those who were examined that regularly drank green tea. The ability of green tea to reduce symptoms of periodontal disease can be traced to the presence of antioxidants in it called catechin.
Previous research, according to oral care specialists, has demonstrated the ability of antioxidants to reduce inflammation in the body. The indicators of periodontal disease measured in the study-periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment loss of gum tissue, and bleeding on probing of gum tissue-mean that there is an inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria in the mouth. The interference in the body's inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria proves that the antioxidants in green tea promote periodontal health by warding off further disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone that support the teeth. It has been associated with the progression of other diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
